This was the first production model of Butterfly Bicycles. It had been two weeks since I took possession, so I was not sure that I would remember how to fold and unfold it even though the manufacturer left me a one page check list. But I had no problems. I wanted and easy ride for the maiden voyage, so I waited until my wife wanted to ride with me. She is a good rider, but a bit slower than me. My problem was that this new recumbent was not only smooth, but it also went faster than I expected, causing me not to get much exercise on the ride as I wanted to keep my bride in sight. I took the hills, both up and down, very well. It also has a built in shock, so it was very smooth. The components on the bike are first rate: Ultegra fork, etc. The bike has beautiful fit and finish and is powder coated red. It takes a minute to fold and 2 minutes to unfold. I highly recommend it. Many Martians have already seen prototypes of the Butterfly. Butterfly is based on Rich Sadler's early folder models. But this one is completely different, faster (to fold and unfold and to ride), lighter, and beautiful fit and finish. (Actually, I am guessing that it rides faster. The only way to tell is if someone rode both bikes and clocked the results. It seem fast.) If you want more information, call Rich as he is the brains behind Butterfly's operation. I don't want to sound like a spoil-sport (but I am!), however, why on earth would anyone want to put themselves through that sort of unpleasantness. If I were running the event, I would have at least 4 separate starts (I didn't say I was practical!), and then let everyone merge, say, at Central Park. By that time, there would have been a sufficient shake-out so the riders that get there will be with riders of like conditioning. The racers will get there first, followed by B-group riders, etc. Now that would be a nice way to ride through the City. Instead of that ride, I plan on doing Glen Goldstein's Ride to Montauk on June 19th: 30 miles ? 66 miles ? 100 miles ? 145 miles. I'm tempted to do the big enchilada, but it's easier said than done. It does sound like a helluva nice week, but I won't have the time, even if I do have the energy. (I did 55 strong, hilly miles this morning on my GTO, so maybe there's hope yet.) I missed it last year because I suffered a mild heart attack. The weather was crappy anyway, so I don't feel so bad. The bummer is that they're not having the pre-ride for marshals this year -- city budget problems are the apparent culprit. As you probably know, we'd ride the whole 42+ miles the Sunday before, and this took place every year that I was a marshal. In fact, some people would ride the pre-ride and not bother to show up the subsequent Sunday. The pre-rides were almost the best part of doing the ride. I'm rather glad that I had suffered the heart attack when I did, last April 16. If my coronary event had waited to occur and if I HAD gone on the pre-ride on April 26, which was an unseasonably warm (hot?) Sunday, then I fear what might have happened chugging up that first Central Park hill or the 59th St Bridge or the VZ. I'm fine now, but with the crappy weather we've been having, I haven't been out all that much and find it a bit difficult getting my biker's legs back this year. In fact, I bonked leaving Long Beach going north, facing a very stiff head wind the first ride of the season. Anyway, I hope to see yuz all on May 2. -Lloyd -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... After the 145 miles you get to go relax when you get to montauk. The next day is spent mostly on Block is at the beach or exploring the island, later in the afternoon off to newport. you really get the day off.On the third day its a 40 mile ride I think with only one hill! The idea is once you get to montauk you're really already there! Also if you are on the Montauk ride you get to have your bags trucked out! I borrowed a gto 2 years ago and brought it to MV. It was so great to have a trike,I always had a beach chair with me! If you go to the martha's page there's a photo with my son in the trailer and my wife on her Toureasy! Hope to see you on the ride! Message-ID: I rode in the 5 Boro last year on my V-Rex after not having ridden it in a about 10 years and it was a lot of fun. What I did was park on Staten Island, and take the ferry across. I was meeting friends up at 18th street, so I rode up the Greenway on the west side and jumped in from there. We must have been somewhere in the middle because we never came to a bottleneck as we usually do just before Central Park, and the ride was really fun. I plan on doing the same thing this year on my TRICE QNT! The other thing is I was surprised how many people were "kicked off" the ride once we got to the 59th St Bridge, if you didn't have a bib you weren't allowed to cross, as it was at all the bridge crossings, there were people from DHS, that was a big change. It's a far cry for the 80's when everyone would just go and do the ride without even registering. Hope I see you guys there, if you want to meet up let me know. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: I will hopefully be riding the 5 boro this year also. I say hopefully as I was signed up last year but chickened out cause it rained. The year before was the first time I had ever ridden the event on a recumbent. It was a blast and I really enjoyed talking to people about my bent. I started ridng the 5 boro on and off starting from the second year they ran it. I think it was the early 70's. That year I sent The American Youth Hostels a check for ONE DOLLAR. As Shoookie has said parking in Staten Island is your best bet. So when the rides over you just jump in your car and head home. The security goons have been out there since 911. I have seen them physically escort people off the course who were not registered. Shoookie I meet you on the Heritage Tail last year. If you like we could meet somewhere for the 5 boro. I will be riding the trail after work Thursday or Friday to try and get in some miles. Email me. I will be riding my latest project a mbb lowracer. As you probably know,we'd ride the whole 42+ miles the Sunday before, and this took placeevery year that I was a marshal. In fact, some people would ride thepre-ride and not bother to show up the subsequent Sunday. The pre-rideswere almost the best part of doing the ride. > > I'm rather glad that I had suffered the heart attack when I did, lastApril 16. If my coronary event had waited to occur and if I HAD gone onthe pre-ride on April 26, which was an unseasonably warm (hot?) Sunday, then I fear what might have happened chugging up that first Central Parkhill or the 59th St Bridge or the VZ. > > I'm fine now, but with the crappy weather we've been having, I haven'tbeen out all that much and find it a bit difficult getting my biker'slegs back this year. In fact, I bonked leaving Long Beach going north, facing a very stiff head wind the first ride of the season. > > Anyway, I hope to see yuz all on May 2. > > -Lloyd > > _______________________________________________ > Bent mailing list > Bent at list.marsride.org > http://list.marsride.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/bent > > > -------------- next part -------------- > An HTML attachment was scrubbed... > URL: http://list.marsride.org/pipermail/bent/attachments/20100328/40f7993a/attachment-0001.htm > > ------------------------------ > > Message: 2 > Date: Sun, 28 Mar 2010 06:39:12 -0700 (PDT) > From: Dan Kinch > Subject: Re: [Bent] 5 boro bike ride > To: "NY/NJ/CT/PA Metro Area Recumbent Society \(MARS\)" > > Message-ID: <497287.81277.qm at web110209.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" > > I'm not sure of the rate for civilians.
