[Bent] car survey

I did a little survey of midtown vehicle traffic. My statistical methodology
involved looking out my office window. 80% of the vehicles were taxis,
buses, limos (all public transportation) or small trucks. Only 20% were
private cars. So there's not much scope to reduce the flow unless you want
to ban taxis. That would be pretty tough politically. There are plans to
expand the Broadway no-vehicle zones, so we shall see. I ride my bike
everywhere, so it won't affect me.

I don't feel as strongly about this as some in this discussion. The area of
town where I work is about commerce, not about human scale or social
interaction. I know some people have strong ideas on which they like, but
there is a place for both types of neighborhoods in a big city. It's similar
to the zeitgeists of cycling in Princeton vs. cycling in Central Park.
One's about recreation; the other's about sex.
