   He's apologized already.
By the way, as a present day country-boy, I really admire those of you who routinely ride in Midtown Manhattan! You've got nerves of steel!

Someone asked what I thought was smug.

  How about:
     You Manhattans are so kind,
liberal and "european" compared with the rest of North America.
If I would move to U.S NYC would be the only alternative.

I expect to hear this kind of smugness on MSNBC, but it is impolite when referring to another's country.

Also, car-free plazas generally don't work in midtown Manhattan. The grid structure makes it hard. Just see what a street fair closure does. There are an increasing number of bike lanes, even some separated from the car flow. However, I don't use them. It's faster to just take the road and mix it up with traffic. More fun too.

Once you get downtown, it's different. Shelley's neighborhood, and the whole financial district, has numerous closures and is easy to bike.

Since I no longer live in NY I guess my brain has atrophied and I'm not able to discern "condescending and smug" in the nuanced writings of Finland folk. Maybe there's some invisible ink coded in between the lines that I should hold above a flame. Perhaps someone can parse the offending material for me.

As an ex-Queens-ite, Manhattanite, and American, I agree. Maybe the tone of the original poster was tinged with some envy, too? I think that if I were writing to people in another country and making comments about their country, the tone would have been worlds different. Personally, when I go somewhere else, I cherish that which is different from where I live, and THAT'

Thank You for your efforts on Xmas week trying to make a meeting with us.

Next time I will choose a more proper time of year.

       ---
We had a great 5 days in Manhattan. You Manhattans are so kind,
liberal and "european" compared with the rest of North America.

If I would move to U.S NYC would be the only alternative.

We were watching a couple of movies ("Invictus" and Pedro Almodovar:
"Broken Embraces") and the Hair -musical.
       All were exellent.
(Hint: Perdo Almodovar is #1 european film director)

The Muse Hotel was superb (Times Square).

We also visitid the American Museum of Natural History ( it was not SO
impressive that we imagined but worth visit).

The main purpose of my visit was to have a good holiday with my son
(and celebrate his 22nd birthday) while he had almost a week vacation
from his ice hockey in Hershey Bears (PA).
       This purpose was fullfilled 100%.

I some one of you ever plans to visit Europe (or Finland!) do not
       hesitate to contact me.

       -----
I noticed that you do not have much pedestrian streets in Manhattan,
One block on Broadway/Times Sqare was all I found.

In almost ALL european cities (not so much in London) there are large
areas for only pedestrians and that is where all people meet (and the
business i flourishing!). I am just wondring why it would not function
       even in Manhattan mid-town?
