Heads-up!!!

I usually respect and obey posted signs when riding, including the ones on
area bridges which state *'Bicycle Riding Prohibited, Must Walk Bikes Across
Walkway'*. Today however, being giddy on warm sun, fresh air, and autumn
splendor, I reached the bridge from Center Bridge to Stockton and since
there were absolutely no pedestrians on the entire length of walkway I
decided to ride across. As I got halfway across I noticed a bridge guard
walking out of his little guardhouse to meet me at the far end of the
bridge. I immediately dismounted, trying to look casual as I reached him,
giving him a friendly "Good Afternoon".  He kindly informed me that my image
was just captured on all 3 cameras that NJ State Police have recently
installed (he pointed the cameras out to me) and that 'facial recognition
software' has now recorded and stored my facial images into the NJ State
Police data bank. Right now (month of October) they are just issuing
warnings, but beginning soon, if persons ride across they will be mailed a
ticket for $495 from the NJ State Police for disregarding posted signs while
operating a moving vehicle (which our bikes in fact are). I'm not sure how
they will know who you are or where to send ticket, but he may have
mentioned being stopped in future and asked for ID. Or maybe they'll match
your facial images to your Driver's License photo. The how is really
immaterial. Sounds like another attempt at raising revenue for the state.

On a separate matter relating to Bull's Island, a sign on the restroom door
stated: On or about November 1st (actually the sign read 'on *our* about'
...but why check our public presentations for accuracy) the entrance to
Bull's Island will be undergoing repair, and the bridge, pedestrian bridge,
boat ramp and restrooms will be closed until December 15th. In fact the sign
states there will be *NO *access to Bull's Island (got it, we can't drive,
walk, or boat to Bull's Island). So I was curious about the last statement
posted on the sign which stated: "All violators will be prosecuted." I
guess that's a warning to potential swimmers who might try to claw their way
up the banks of the Delaware.
