300 miles on the 2nd annual Brita Climate Ride, going from New York
City to Washington, D.C. Together, these people plan to make a
powerful statement about the need for renewable energy and carbon
emissions reductions. The organizers offer the following as the
top-three reasons why you should join in: 1) Be part of a grassroots
effort by joining a fascinating group of renewable energy
experts, climate activists, and concerned citizens; 2) The riding
itself is fantastic, following country roads through Amish Country
and past Revolutionary War and Civil War sites; and 3) It's fun,
unforgettable, and fully-supported. Visit the event website to
register (and to see videos and photos from the 2008 version of
the ride):

END OF SEASON ADVENTURES
Speaking of great tours, Adventure Cycling is looking ahead to its
late summer and fall tours, and they offer some of the best values
and terrains in our schedule. Coming in mid-August is the
fully-supported Oregon Coast and Covered Bridges trip, featuring
fresh organic produce and refreshing sea breezes. At harvest time
we'll be offering our second annual Farm Fresh tour in Northern
California's wine country (September 19-26) and during chile
season in New Mexico, you can enjoy the scenic, self-contained
Enchanted Loop tour (September 26-October 8). We also have a
few spaces left for a supported adventure on the car-free C&O
Towpath and Great Allegheny Passage (September 19-26). Go here for
these great rides:

CYCLING BLISS
We at Adventure Cycling were honored recently to have installed in our
office bike collection the unique =E2=80=9Ctriple tandem=E2=80=9D ridden=
by the late
Bill Bliss (a world-class bicycle traveler and commuter) and his two
young daughters when they, along with thousands of others, pedaled the
TransAm Trail in 1976. The complex process of dismantling, shipping,
and re-assembling the triplet was made possible with the financial
and technical assistance of several individuals and entities. Find
out more here:

And finally, our local newspaper, the Missoulian, just ran a story
about the triplet:

CHALLENGE 1: DESIGN
Oregon Manifest, a Portland, Oregon-based organization advocating
the cycling lifestyle, is currently promoting its first annual
Constructor's Design Challenge. The challenge will present bicycle
frame builders and designers from around the nation with the
opportunity to create an innovative, modern transportation bike. More
than forty top builders of hand-built, custom bikes are expected to
take the challenge. "If the bicycle is ever to realize its potential
to change the urban transportation landscape--and mindset--it'll
take a bike that can multi-task the demands of everyday urban
transport," said Jocelyn SyCip, Oregon Manifest's director. "The
Constructor's Design Challenge is a unique way to jump start the
conversation about what constitutes a great, modern, all-around
transportation bike." Learn more here:

people from thirteen cities worldwide will rise to the 2009
challenge, "committing their keys and their consciences to being
