Actually, there is a way around it.

Since it sounds like you were going north:

Turn back, and after the viaduct, you'll see an exit to the right into a
small street (Dearborne St).  Take that exit. At the corner, turn right (Saw
Mill River Road, not to be confused with Saw Mill River Parkway).  Left on
Barney Street.  Trail continues to your right.
