I was involved with the transition of SCU my local bike club into an
official non profit several years ago. No way does MARS want to go that
route. As long as there are five or so "officers" minding the vault I would
just leave everything alone. $2100 will be way below any official legal
radar. Little old lady in trouble just send her some money. Keep it
simple.
I also advanced the idea of asking for recommendations for official non
profit organizations (501C) to donate the money to. Split it up maybe five
ways, write checks and send it off. No value decisions here, just send me a
copy of their official brochure demonstrating they are an official non
profit and they get some money. Didn't want to ignite a nasty discussion
just wanted to clean out a bloated bank account.
What finally happened? A story for another day but you should know I have
put way too much thought into decisions like this.
